Going from unbelief to belief is pretty difficult.

You cannot make yourself believe in something, no matter how much you try. I think the only way to believe in it would be to actually see it, experience it, whatever. That proof is subjective and isn't the same for everyone.

It would be like saying -- here's your proof, this tree. If I know where a tree comes from, how it originated and how it grows, it wouldn't be proof for me that a god exists. Whereas, someone who is not as knowledgeable about trees may think -- yeah, that's exactly the proof I needed to believe in god.

If you were gullable enough to fall for Pascal's Wager, or the Watchmaker analogy then you're definately a candidate for believing in god. However, if you still have to question it, regardless of the "proof" given, you're more than likely unable to go from unbeliever to believer.

By realizing that it's not unbelief in the real nature of God/Jesus but that it's unbelief in all of the concepts and beliefs and manufactured projections of them. Every concept and belief and teaching about Jesus and God are just that: concepts and beliefs. By rejecting them, you're ironically closer to the real god/jesus. And the only way the answer can be found is by direct experience -- called enlightenment. This experience is always there to be had but is blocked by our mind's concepts, perceptions, thoughts, etc. -- all the beliefs and things that go into making up the self concept of ourselves. People in all religions (and no religion) have had this non-dualistic experience of enlightenment. For a christian perspective, check out st john of the cross and Meister Eckhart. For a zen perspective, check out 3 pillars of zen. For a Muslim (Sufi) one, check out Rumi. Etc. etc.

Dear NoNamer,

Man of his own accord cannot overcome unbelief. There are many people in Y/A answers who are religious and can even quote Bible verses. They have learned the doctrines of their churches very well and are able to explain them to others but they are not saved. Read Matthew 7:21-23. Salvation or being saved ffrom your sins is a work that only God can do. Being saved is also referred to as being "born again", "the washing of regeneration", "baptized with the Holy Spirit" and others. Man CANNOT get himself saved nor can he do anything that will merit salvation! Look at these verses: "Which were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God". (John 1:13); "So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy." (Romans 9:16).
The Bible tells us that ALL men are sinners. The penalty for sin is eternal damnation in hell. The Lord in His freat mercy has elected to save some of these rebels and make them His children. He chose these "elect" ones before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:3-5). The Lord does ALL the work in salvation because man is spiritually DEAD in sins and trespasses and cannot hear God, let alone oby Him.
The vehicle through which the LORD saves is through the hearing of the word of God. If God is going to save a person, it will occur under the hearing of the word of God-the Bible. The Bible says, "So then, faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God." Faith is a synonym for the Lord Jesus (Revelation 19:11). So then, Christ cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. I suggest that you read the Bible slowly and prayerfully. Ask the Lord to have mercy on you. This does not assure that you will be saved, but if the Lord is going to save you it will happen in the environment of hearing the Bible.

If you are "trying" to believe in God or Jesus then you must have an ulterior motive. Ask yourself what that motive is. If its anything remotely selfish then your already on the wrong track. If you don't believe in God and Jesus then why have you automatically jumped to the Christian route? Just search for God in the world and yourself; any religon can help you since they all have something to contribute. My suggestion is to learn to love yourself and others, and also keep your mind focused and clear. Powerful ideas will soon begin to seep in to guide the way.

If the person wants to become a Christian, that's fine. They should talk to clergy, read the required reading, pray and try to live the life that Jesus laid out.

However if a person is truly happy on the life path they are on, why change?

I'm not sure I see the point in doing so. If you didn't like broccoli, would eating it every day make it tasty? If you don't want to believe, will praying make everything better?

It's your life and your choices to make, whether they involve God or not.

I don't know.

How can a Christian overcome belief in that which they have no evidence?

Ridiculous question. People have a right to believe or disbelieve whatever they choose. There is nothing to "overcome"

That is like asking how to cure someone of being healthy. It makes no sense. Why would anyone want to go from rationality to delusional suerstitionism?

Prayer and study really are the best way. It does take faith, but faith isn't unreasonable. It's based on the fact that no one can refute the resurrection. If it didn't happen, why did many disciples die for what they knew was a lie? Why did Paul become a Christian when he got paid to kill them for corrupting Judaism? Something happened to all of them that convinced them that Jesus was the Messiah, that thing was the resurrection. They wouldn't have died for something they knew was a lie.

At some point you have to have faith. We can't know all the answers but we can take comfort in knowing that God does.
