Maybe your petting him a little too hard. Or theres an injury you cant see from the outside. Maybe his bone/skull could be damaged and i would go check with the vet. and its also a possibility that he doesnt like the spot you are petting him in. But either way You still should go check with a vet. Good Luck.

I had a beagle that did that a few times and i took him to the vet and we came to discover that he had arthritis or an inflamation of the joints. That is just part of the aspect of aging.

Julian...there are some good answer's here...My thought is...How old is he?...As they get older, yes, they can develop hidden ailment's. Just as we do..So, where exactly does it hurt when petted...where were you petting him...any particular area????...Regardless, Get him examined..especially if this just started...Obviously, something is wrong...tc...Yuke

unless you are a vet, you can't tell if he is hurt or sick if it is not obvious. get him checked by a reputable vet. tell them what is happening when you pet your dog. some cries mean different things.

Perhaps you are approaching the dog too quickly and frightening him. Has someone been mistreating it? Don't know .
