The cemetery.
I don't believe in an afterlife, re-incarnation or the spirit world. I also believe that if there WERE an afterlife, the question of whether I go there or not is more about who I am than how I choose to live my life (especially since one is simply a result of the other).
The only thing that's certain is that you have precious few years of this life to live so enjoy them as much as you can and don't worry about what happens once it's over.
Sorry if it's not the kind of answer you were after but I figure you should get a broad spectrum of opinions.

I don't necessarily believe in religion. PEOPLE created religion. For example, a group of people agreed with some principles of a religion but not all so they broke off and created their own branch of the religion. What crap is that?!!! However, I do believe in God (I think I do) and possibly even Jesus. I DEFINITELY without a doubt believe in an afterlife. People who die and are resuscitated often speak about having an out of body experience. I don't know if their is a heaven, but I'd like to think that when I die, I will get to be with the people who I love.

All depends on their State of consciousness when they pass over. Most of humanity are in the Astral Plane, a few in the Mental Plane and even fewer in the Christ Plane or Higher! There is absolutely no heaven as taught in the various religions. What you sow you reap! ALL IS A STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS! People need to wake up and stop believing all the S H I T that religions feed you! and Stand ih the Light! Jesus said the "wages of Sin is Death"! The biggest 'Sin' is Ignorance. No one has to die! Did NOT Jesus show you VICTORY over death?

My Grandma called 'Mamaw' by me, died in 2001. I have always felt when people die they are just gone somewhere, I have never been sure where and I would cherish their memory. Recently, I had an experience while I was in a lot of pain of my 'Mamaw's' presence with me and I could hear her voice in my mind talking to me. It was real and I was not on any pain medication. So I am not sure about whether our loved ones hang around us now. I think they have important things they are doing in the afterlife but when we are in dire straits they will come to offer comfort. They still care about us.

It may sound a bit Shallow but nonetheless it is my unweavering belief. It depends on the way of Burial, If a person was buried Six Feet under, that is where he/she Remains until the body decomposes. With incremation is either scattering the ashes in the river, Ocean, or contained in a bottle.

I think that for a while their spirit, if it chooses, lingers around us for a while, to make sure we are okay. Then, the spirit travels to another plane, to do any spiritual work that they need to do in preparation for their return to the earth plane to be reincarnated. This process can take ages, that is why they are able to visit us or communicate with us through a medium (a good medium, not one of those anoying fakes!) That is what I think happens to souls that have accepted death. Others, I won't go into.

I have no education or fancy words, but I'll try to answer.
I have yet to have the sadness of loosing family members, but I lost a shipmate. He was very young.
I like to think he is reassigned to watch over my son, as I named him after my friend. So to encompass all souls I would like to think GOD has a purpose for them and they are happy and busy. When they can - they visit, and we think of them and are happy.
As GOD handles this I rarely wonder about Joe, or any of the deceased, as they are at peace in GODs presence. Again I don't know what GOD has in plan for us after we die.
P.S. Sorry I don't follow my religions guidelines religiously, I have my own opinions. All humans have value, and a purpose - humans just don't know what it is. But GOD does.

I believe they are in Heaven with the Lord with God. I believe those who had no belief in the Son of God Jesus Christ are in the grave more or less asleep until the final "white throne judgment of God' when all mankind will have to give account for their choices in this life and Jesus will make the judgment of eternal life or eternal sleep {separation from God eternally}.

What happens when a person dies?
The spirits of both the righteous and the wicked return to God. Their bodies return to dust.
"Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it." Ecclesiastes 12:7.
Answer: The body turns to dust again, and the spirit goes back to God, who gave it. The spirit of every person who dies--whether righteous or wicked--returns to God at death.
What is the "spirit" that returns to God at death?
There is nothing mysterious about the spirit that returns to God at death. It is the breath of life.
"The body without the spirit ["breath," see margin] is dead." James 2:26. "The spirit of God ["the breath which God gave him," see margin] is in my nostrils." Job 27:3.
Answer: The spirit that returns to God at death is the breath of life. Nowhere in all of God's book does the "spirit" have any life, wisdom, or feeling after a person dies. It is the "breath of life" and nothing more.
What is a "soul"?
These four people are four souls.
"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." Genesis 2:7.
Answer: A soul is a living being. A soul is always a combination of two things: body plus breath. A soul cannot exist unless body and breath are combined. God's Word teaches that we are souls.
Do souls die?
"The soul that sinneth, it shall die." Ezekiel 18:20. "Every living soul died in the sea." Revelation 16:3.
Answer: According to God's Word, souls do die! We are souls, and souls die. Man is mortal (Job 4:17). Only God is immortal (1 Timothy 6:15, 16). The concept of an undying, immortal soul goes against the Bible, which teaches that souls are subject to death.
Do good people go to heaven when they die?
"All that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth." John 5:28, 29. "David ... is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day." "For David is not ascended into the heavens." Acts 2:29, 34. "If I wait, the grave is mine house." Job 17:13.
Answer: No, people do not go either to heaven or hell at death. They go to their graves to await the resurrection day.
