The daughter of a friend of mine, 13 yo,got a really harsh punishment for her mom, for bad behavior. For 1 month the girl, except for school time, has to be in bed all the time, including weekends and holydays. No TV, computer, etc. Friends just for homework at her bedside. The girl, of course, is allowed to use the bathroom, for the strictly necessary time.
Her mom said she has an electronic device similar to a camera, a kind of sensor that can register when the girl gets up and comes back to bed. So her mom can control her punishment without having to watch the girl 24/7. With such device she can know how many times the girl left her bed and for how much time, and decide if it was reasonable for bathrommneed or not.
I think this punishment is simply cruel and can cause seriuos psychological damages. In my opinion its even child abuse. Is it legal?

OMG,,thats terrible..i honestly agree with you on that,,that just to harsh for a punishment..i can see being grounded to your room but to your bed.thats just wrong..and the fact that she's got a device so taht she's monitored 24/7 is just plain cruel. and i also agree with you about it being damaging to that child. And about the legal part..we aren't really going to be able to answer that part cuase we do't know where you live..the rules for that stuff is different in every state/province..your best bet is to either look it up, or call the social services (don't tell them your name or anything)(and even use a pay phone if you want) call them and ask to speak to one of the workers. tehy would be able to answer your question better.

It's hard to say... The camera thing maybe to much but when I was in middle school we were watching Roots in history class and then had to do a report on it. So I ditched that class for the 3 days we watched the movie (this way I didn't have to do the report) My dad found out and made a deal with my teacher about me turning the report in late! Needless to say I had to read the book instead of watch the movie it took me over a month and until I was done I had to sit at the kitchen table everyday from the time I woke up at 7 till I went to bed at 9- I had 10 minute showers and my bathroom breaks were monitored! This went on for over a month... The way I see it the girl has it lucky, a bed is much more comfortable then a kitchen chair!! I turned out fine... and well never ditched school again!

This is a tough question. First of all, are you certain that your friend isn't exaggerating a bit? If she's being truthful, then the punishment is extreme, to say the least. Speak with a counselor at school, and perhaps they can check into the allegations for you. School counselors have a legal obligation to report any and all child abuse, so that would be a good way for you to go. Good luck!

I would never think to do something like that to any of my children. I wouldn't even issue something like that on a dog let alone a human being! I'd be making phone calls to agencies to find out what the laws pertaining to this are.

as a working single parent, it was hard to discipline my kids and keep on track of things, but then I was blessed to have good kids, and the reason is communication, we talk about anything and everything know matter how difficult it was, even things that I did when I was younger kid myself know matter how ashamed I was for doing it, they understood that I was there for them, and I would never do anything that would harm them, I don't know what the girl did to make her parent distrust her so much, but that doesn't sound cruel or child abuse to me, it could be worse!

I hope your not exaggerating this, or she is but, I agree that she shouldn't be treated like a fcuking dog.
It's like a fcuking tracking device on her, I wouldn't say it's cruelty, just a bit extreme. If it was cruelty, it would be like beating someone severly.
But, if it really bothers you that much, and it's probably a better idea if you do talk to someone about it.

Sounds like the parent can't watch her so the parent is using the device and bed to do it for them. Also some trust issues there as well. Sounds kinda whack to me but I guess as a parent you do what you have to to keep the reigns tight.

This is over-kill. Contact Child Protective Services. Emotional abuse can leave scars that last longer than physical abuse (NOT that I condone any type of abuse)...this child needs help!
