The reference I believe is to venerating religious leaders as higher than ourselves. It was common practice among certain religious communities at the time of Christ, such as the gnostics, to refer to their leaders as "Father", and thus bestowing on them excessive honor, due only to God. These "Fathers" were able almost deified and this was considered heresy by true believers. A modern day example of this would be the Catholic church, which bestows the title of Father on her priests and even grants them the power to hear confession, forgive sins and perform other God-like functions.

Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Exodus 23:13 And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.
Judges 10:13 Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.
We need to pay attention to Exodus 23; 13. We are not to make mention of any other gods that it be heard from our mouth. Only speak of the Almighty God.

God didn't write that book. It was written by a bunch of guys. Some of them were really enlightened, and others were manipulating the texts for temporal power.
Let's not get too literal in our translations and do kooky stuff.
