God parents are the same as sponsors at baptism and confirmation .
All main Christian denominations have them.

I was raised Lutheran and forced to go to church every Sunday for 20 years and I can safely say that Lutherans did this, too. I was baptized and had/have godparents, so at least when I was growing up, it wasn't just the Catholics that had them.

Although now, for reasons I don't know, either the Lutheran church as a whole or maybe just the church I grew up in now calls them "sponsors" instead of godparents. I think they may have started doing that when I was a teenager. I might be an atheist now who hasn't set foot in a church for regular service in nearly ten years, but I do recall that when I still had to go, they did call godparents "sponsors" when I was a teenager.

When I was a kid, it was still godparents, but now, at least in the church I was raised in, it's now "sponsors". Same thing, different name. Not sure what the reason for the change was or if it's something that just the church I went to did or if it's a change that went through all Lutheran churches. Not really sure what caused the change, but I know it's "sponsors" now where it was "godparents" when I was a kid.

I think most people still consider a kid's "sponsor" their "godparent", but last I checked, it's "sponsors" now. Used to be that the Lutherans did have "godparents" too, as I had them when I was baptized twenty-five years ago, but maybe the Catholics are the only ones that still have them now. Not really sure. Far as I know, "sponsors" are still godparents, just under a different title.
