I am a 29 year old black female. Everyone in my family has long hair. We are part indian and part creole. I noticed everyone has hair on there legs also. It lays down but its not so long or thick where you look like a gorilla. I have noticed the older male friends in my life love the hair on my legs but the younger ones always say I need to shave. Why is that?

For women, the practice of shaving the legs derives from a current cultural standard in the West that deems leg hair on women unattractive. This standard emerged during the twentieth century, at a time when women's legs became more visible, and when the safety razor made the practice of leg shaving practical. The reasons for this cultural standard are debated, but this is sometimes seen as an example of a cultural mechanism for increasing sexual dimorphism. Others have suggested that it was promoted as a means of selling razors to a broader segment of the populace.

Depending on the amount of hair on their legs or the amount of the woman's patience, some women may only shave the hair below the knee, while others shave the entire leg. The frequency of shaving also varies from individual to individual. Some shave as often as every day, and others may not bother to shave at all during winter months when their legs aren't visible to the public. In general, younger women tend to shave more frequently than older women. Women who shave their legs typically do so either while bathing or showering.

Some women, despite the social pressure for hairless legs in certain Western countries, simply never shave at all. While some refrain out of laziness or lack of concern, others do so in protest of what they consider an unnatural and repressive societal double-standard. Still others refrain in an effort to be less environmentally wasteful. Research also suggests that women who do not shave their body hair are "characterized by higher global self-esteem." [1] Scholars suggest that this is because women with lower levels of self-esteem are less likely to be satisfied with their natural bodies, and thus more likely to alter them. [2]

Most women usually begin the practice at some point during their adolescence. It can serve as an unofficial "rite of passage" into womanhood in some countries.

Special razors, somewhat different in shape from razors aimed at men who shave their faces, are often marketed at women. Advertising campaigns promote hair removal products, which, when applied to the woman's legs, allegedly will make them "sexy" or "silky smooth".

Why do 70's / 80's playboys show women with lots of bush while modern playboys show women shaved bare?

It's just the style preferences of the time. Younger guys were raised looking at smooth women; everything shaved. Older guys were raised in a time when body hair was sexy.

Leg hair has usually been a universal "turn off" for men in general. But, some women get away with leg hair if it's fine or hard to notice.

You may run across some guys that like leg hair. You'll run across some that don't.

Recommendation ... do whatever your current guy likes. If he likes you shaved, shave it. If not, let it grow. As long as you don't look like a "gorrilla" as you said when you wear dresses with bare legs. (Saw a black chick like that at the grocery store one day. At first I thought her legs were all bruised up. Then I got closer and noticed it was leg hair that hadn't been shaved in... ever. I almost lost my lunch.)

For one element, no person should recognize except you tell them. previous that - looking after your self is a good element. to boot to assisting your dermis it facilitates with rigidity besides. i may be ok if my husband did this. I laughed at your gay remark - my son is gay and would not guard his dermis, hair, etc. in any respect. I wish he took somewhat extra useful care of himself and his visual charm, oh nicely, i think some stereotypes do purely not extra healthful.... scientific expert Distorto - you have 25 year previous dermis. purely wait, this is astonishing what happens to it as we age. i'm 40 six and am surprised via the dryness of my dermis. i'm a woman and did no longer do plenty care, yet now I moisturize or it may chafe and crack it gets so dry.

culture is changing all the time.
traditionally white people were more into shaving legs (women).
my guess is that the younger guys in your family
have merged more into the predominant culture.
i don't think you should shave. be your natural beautiful self.
like your mom, grandma, etc before you.

shaving is just a part of being a women, some cultures don't do it because its "natural" but do it because you can shave now and the young men will like it and then when you get old you won't have to ask much, but i would still recommend it

Do what you prefer. If you like to be natural, then don't shave. If you prefer shaven skin, do that. However, be aware that once you start you have to keep it up and do it often, otherwise you have "stubble" like men get "5 o'clock shadow" when their beards grow out EVERY DAY.

It's just how you're raised, some guys love a woman to be "natural" and others don't. That's why I do what I want to do and, yes, I shave. I prefer no hair.
