Camera is Canon EOS650, I just want to finish the film (without buying new battery) before posting it to buyer (sold it for peanuts, so don't want to waste more money).

You're right to be puzzled. The principles of film and digital photography are 95% the same, and digital is simply a much, much better teaching tool. Here's why I think it's still being done: 1) The instructors learned on film cameras so they think everyone else should, too 2) Until about 3 years ago, fully-adjustable digital cameras (DSLRs) were far too expensive for students to afford Colleges are simply lagging behind. (Imagine if their engineering courses were run like that -- "I learned on a slide rule and you will too!") Enjoy the course, but remember that every hour spent mixing chemicals is an hour not learning the essentials of lighting, composition and exposure, which is what you need to know to take any kind of pictures at all. Just my 2 pesos. V

Never tried or heard of anyone trying to recharge a primary lithium battery...don't know if it would be worth the risk...take it into a camera shop and see if they'll give you an almost exhausted battery for nothing. (use them for demos ect)
