Well, I am going to a football game tonight with one of my VERY good friends; Caitlin. She is absolutely in love with this football player named Austin, and I want to get them hooked up. Problem is, he is my ex, and I'm scared to be around him or even close to him because I don't want to get hooked up at all! I'm not sure if he's interested or not, but knowing him, he'll try and get me back.
How should I approach this?

What an ego. She's your friend, and you're willing to ruin her hopes, just because your ego is as big as a whale? Sweetheart, you ain't that special. Yeah, you might've had something special with this guy, but if it's over, it's over. Sounds to me as if you want him back more than he wants you back. I sincerely hope your friend gets him, though.

dont get involved, he probably wouldnt want to go for your friend since you two are exs. also, if you are worried about him tryin to get with you, then how would you even expect to turn his attention away. i would just tell her to go talk to him with out you. having you there would only cause drama.
