After he's been sleep for an hour or so he starts "jumping" in his sleep and starts whinning. Why do they do that? I understand that it may be just that he's body is at complete rest but is there anything besides that?

I'm not necesarily concerned...just a question. He regularly goes to the vet so I know he's healthy. I was just curious. He doesn't vomit or anything...he just "spams/jumps" for a second or 2 and then he'll like either growl, lowly bark, sort of hiccup or just whine.

Sounds like he's dreaming. My dogs dream all the time. My cocker spaniel who NEVER barks was growling and barking like crazy while she was in a deep sleep. (Those dream rabbits had better watch out!)

My dog does it all the time! He is just dreaming, I guess. It's not a problem, all dogs do it. My dog kicks his leg and growls sometimes while he is sleeping! It is hilarious!

I say same as Miriam. My puppy wags her tail or whines in her sleep. My dad is a vet... he says it is normal. Can't help you much... SORRY!

Those are signs of a healthy, growing dog. How old is he? I bet he is still young and if not, it is still normal and okay that he does that.

could it be seizures? are the whinings raised your goose pimples? did he lose control of his bladder?
do monitor him for the next few days, & see if it gets too frequent even during his waking hours.
i just hope that he is dreaming :)

ok...i see...so, he's just dreaming ;)
2 years ago, my maltese started whining in the middle of the night & shaking all over. we thought she was just dreaming. turned out, it became frequent. i took her to the vet & it was food poisoning.
