I have just taken up oil painting and am looking for video tutorials online - just to show me some of the basic steps - it looks so easy when you see the masters do it but all I'm getting at the moment is a canvas that looks like it's covered in mud - colourful mud - and on a dark night in a badly lit room wearing sunglasses it actually looks ok
HELLLLLLLLLLLP

Some video instructions offer the quick & easy way to finish an oil painting much like fastfood's drive through. The effect of those technique really looks cheap and very commercial like. A good oil painting relies on a good composition and a understanding of "value" (dark vs. light). Don't jump into colors too quickly, evaluate the overall feeling of the art work you'd like to present first. Study where you'd like to put the dark colors & the bright colors - where you'd like to draw audience's attention. Spend more time visualiziing in your mind before you actually do it. To start just use a small brush & some brown color paint (wtih thinner) to sketch your composition on the canvas. Block out the shaded areas with more dark brown paint. At this stage, it's only a very thin layer of paints, but you can tell where the light sources are & where the shadows will eventurally go. Next, start to add small patches of colors in your work - again, a thin layer at a time. You'll need to wait for each layer to dry a little bit before you can add the next layer - this will prevent your work from becoming a puddle of mud. This is why an oil painting can take weeks, months or years to finish because you can continue to add layer after layer, or scrape off a certaion part & start over. It's important to pause and step back once a while to evaluate your own work & make sure you are on the right track. Just don't force yourself to continue & finish it when it doesn't feel right.

If you're learning to paint to go www.wetcanvas.com and check out the oils forum. It's completely free, and you'll learn so much. The people are very friendly. There are demos on that site as well.

Happy painting and welcome to the world of oils!!
