Every Medico gets his Medical Education at the cost of the State or the Community that runs the colleges and provide the teaching and examining set up. Even the so called self financing colleges do not have to bear the full cost of training. Hence it is fair that those who enter the profession should make the beginning by attending to the needs of the marginalised sections of the population. It will also help them to appreciate the value of the facilities they will enjoy at the urban Centres later on .

Another interesting feature I noticed in this compulsory rural posting is that the young doctor learns to improvise faciities when faced with a resource crunch in materials or men. It brings out the best in him/her. They should thank the State for this opportunity rather than blame them for it or curse the poor.

What's wrong with going in rural areas?
The present picture of rural India is not good in your mind. You can take chance to go there and change the scene by providing medical service. It is our social responsibility to serve the deprived society. Don't you think?
If nobody will go to village then the migration rate will increase and the cities of India will become urban town with lack of sufficient facilities. If you are thinking that it is wrong decision to send the medicos in rural areas, like many fresher medicos, you should reconsider it.
Do not compare medicos with the MBAs and others those are joining metro corporate environments and serving the multinationals and feeling happy, this is a way of life; but responsible citizens like doctors especially the young ones think in a different way. The IPS and IAS also join rural areas in their beginning period.
If doctors would not care rural India then who will think of it? May be the way the government forced the medicos to work in villages is not suitable, but I want to remind you the medical ethics.
On the other hand the rural scenario is changing, villages are not backward like before, today even the shepherds are enjoying mobile another technology. And one who wish to earn money he/she can earn in rural area also. So if you are a medico or relative make your mind to serve the society in more responsible way.

Though it is a good idea for medicos to spend some time at rural health care centres, it cannot be forced upon them. As per the DIRECTIVE PRINCIPLES of the STATE, providing health care for people is the responsibility of the Government.

Why just doctors, by the same analogy, Engineers, Accountants, Teachers, Lawyers, etc; everyone must be sent for a rural stint. It is unfair to single out only the medicos for this. I think the Government is shying away from its responsibility of being a Welfare State and putting the onus on already over-burdened students who have to live as resident doctors in shameful conditions.

There is nothing wrong. First of all medicos should serve in rural and military also. They should volunteer. Great? Some may accept this. Some may not even like a dirty peasant coming from the village and seeking medical help.

Medical profession is a noble one. The doctors should think on a spiritual level because they are healing the bodies of afflicted souls. It is service oriented. And in India, 80% of the population live in villages. So the need is more in rural India than in urban India. Since many doctors are not service oriented, the government has to think of a way to cater to the rural population. Since incentives and moral philosophy are not working, they have to make it compulsory. In this way, I think this is fair that the doctors should serve for some time in rural areas before they start their urban stint.

It is perfectly fair. Medicos in the beginning must work in the rural areas. They must come forward voluntarily instead of pressure. In India, if village develops country develops.

If you studied in a government medical college, it is fair. The education in these colleges is heavily subsidised. So returning a part of the money which ordinary tax payers spent on your education, by serving in villages where doctors seldom practice, is perfectly fair. After your short stint in a village you would be free to practice anywhere and make lots of money.
If you studied in a private college, it would be unfair if you were forced to practice in villages against your wish. But it would show your concern and sense of duty for the less fortunate sections of our society.
