this has happened to me several times. sigh. sometimes, the officer has taken the driver's license number I've memorized and will 'run it' and see it's me. another time, i've gotten a ticket. with the ticket, i had to go to court and show my license, which resulted in dismissal. (I think because I was there in business attire and spoke out loud and respectfully to the judge.)

A lot of different things ... one - just a ticket is issued; or you can be taken directly to jail. It taken to jail the car will be impounded. Either way once the license is shown to the judge the matter should be dismissed.

What can happen is you may get a ticket for no license in possession. He would run your name and D.O.B on his computer and make sure your license is valid.

Depends where you are. In California, you can get a ticket for not having your license in your possession if they can identify you. Worst case scenario (but rare) would be you get booked into jail for not being able to properly identify yourself.

If you get a nice cop they will either run you by your number if you've memorized it, or by your name a date of birth. When they see you have one, they will usually let you go with a warning. If you get a jerk cop he could give you a ticket for not having it with you. It would be rare for a cop to take you to jail for something so small, unless he suspects you of doing something bigger, and just needs a reason to arrest you.

I would obtain your name and DOB. I would request a license check. If the information came back clear, I'd issue you a warning citation and send you on your way.

Depends where you are. In the UK you have seven days to report to a police station with your documents. In the USA you will be cited and, in all likelihood, fined.
