Being 'In Love' with someone is when they take your breath away when they walk in the door, you can't wait to see them, they are the first and last thing you think of when you wake up, you can't wait to talk to them, you want to be around them all the time. You can love someone and not feel the 'spark' with them. Like for example, say you have been married for a while and things just aren't right between you. You know you love him, but the spark you once shared isn't there anymore and you have tried to re-kindle it, you are not in love. I hope this helps, but you need to keep i mind one thing, this may not work for you. Everyone is different when it comes to what love is and how it's portrayed to them.

This is just my opinion but I think that you can love someone and not be in love with them anymore. For example, lets say you have been married for a long time and you have children with your spouse, you will always love them but sometimes the spark goes and there isn't an emotional connection other then the children. You will always care about that person but don't feel like you want to be with them in an intimate situation. I hope this makes sense and it is only my opinion.

To keep it simple and within the "main" difference, LOVING someone means it can be platonic, just your average parent to kid or brother to sister love, friendships, you care for them, you wanna be with them, you want the best for them, BEING IN LOVE has all those elements BUT it has passion, the sexual attraction in it.

Loving someone is a deep caring that you would have for a best friend, for example. Being in love with someone is overwhelming and takes up your whole soul. It makes your soul sing when you are near them.
