Every time my wife or I chop onions we remember that there is supposedly a way to keep your eyes from tearing up. What is it?

Eat chewing gums when you are chopping onions ,it will definetely help you out. Or you can run water in the whole onion for 2 minutes and then chop it. all the best onion chopping.

First, cold onions right from the fridge cause less tearing. Next, be sure to leave the root area intact throughout your chopping. Once you cut that you are in for it. I have also seen chefs that soak them in milk, for instance if they are making onion rings, so they have to handle the onions for a while. They will do as above, then slice the rings and put them in milk until ready to bread and fry. Just for the fumes, not as part of the breading process, but I imagine it works for both.

Before you chop onions you should put them it water, it takes the tears away.

slice a lemon up and stick the slices in you but eye know you won't be tearing about that onion

put them under the water as your peeling it, this way when you chop them it isnt so strong and doesnt bother your eyes too much.or if its peeled allready just run them under the water for a few seconds

use a blender or something that doesn't have ur face near the onion
