A shinai since it's mostly used in tornaments

Depends on what you are trying to do. Shinai are good for developing technique and learning the basics of practical application. Bokken are better for developing the strength of arm and hand, fingers and wrists necesary for weilding the actual katana and are used for training in application at more advanced levels.

It all depends on what style you are training in, and what you are looking to do with the weapon.

The Shinai is traditionaly only used for Kendo, in sparring and contact drills..
Then bokken is used in kendo, for floor training and katas.

Then also bokken are used in other popular sword arts. Such as Iai, and kenjustu.

there 4 diggrent things... shinai is 4 hittin people but u can use em both 4 pratice they both have diffrent feels.... if ya wanna get strong usa a subarito... oh i also saw a bokuto made of metal....
