Thoroughbred race horses can be claimed for as little as 2000-75000.00, purchasing a two year old who has never raced can run between 5k and 15 million, depending who the sire and dam are. To board a horse at a race track it cost between 1k an several thousand a month. It's much cheaper to have your own land and knowledge of horses. Quarter horses are not high maintenance like a race horse an are more durable an need less attention but are still a lot of work, and can be very expensive to keep and feed. Even a plain riding horse can cost you 3-4 hundred a month to keep.
Note: Race horse owners can sometimes work deals with trainers and allow trainers a % of race winnings to avoid high boarding bills.

Depends what you want to do with them.. YOu can check out Horse and Hound for prices of horses.. For equestrian jumpers they are range depending how experienced the horse is and how high they have jumped averaging about USD 40k to 100k.. Dressage horses can tend to be pricier.. However if you are a beginner and need something to use to see if you are interested in the sport you can always opt for an ex race horse which can be bought for under 1k as most owners are willing to let go as long as the horse gets a good home.
Location of where you buy the horse will also determine the price of the horse.. New Zealand jumpers tend to be cheaper than the Europeans and even in Europe you have a different degree of pedigree..

Buying one is relatively cheap...it's the upkeep that can exceed the cost of the horse within a year.....to properly care for one.... Shoeing...vet visits..food...medicine if needed...grooming....exercise.
Of course some just get a horse and only has a vet see it if ever if anything happens to it....and it just sits in a pen most of the day.
