I suggest this reverse phone lookup service: http://reversephone.toptips.org
It's a cheap service that works great!
It could be used for a much deeper search. You can use it to get hold of different varieties of background reports, and in addition cell numbers, addresses and names..
you can get unlimited reports... I ran with this because I required to verify more numbers. You can get the name, other phone number, address history, relatives, and much more about anyone!
The completly free reverse phone lookup generally doesn't provide anything interesting. To get interesting information, money will must be paid. The free searches don't provide considerably more than what may be found through the phone directory.
The reverse phone detective search tool does work, but you should use just the service that I posted above. The last thing you want to do, is pay for a service and find the numbers you want to lookup are not available in their directory.
The service that I reccomend doesn't have any kind of problem , you won't get any bad surprise!

BT can see the name of the service provider on the line but they are legally not allowed to say who it is.
I you want to have the line with BT and it is not a cable line or LLU (local loop unbundled such as Bulldog) then BT will arange for the line to come back to them and activate it, this may take up to 2 weeks depending on the service provider the line belongs to.
If you do not want the line to be with BT and you want to go with an other company such as Talk Talk, Onetel, Post Office then that company will have to do the leg work. If they tell you to phone BT they are fobbing you off, as it costs money for a service provider to activate a line. And many companies do not want to pay this fee even if it means you dont sign up with them.
If the line is not on the BT network you can phone OFCOM as a last resort and they can tell you who the line is as the regulator.
So if you want BT to activate the line and willing to go into a contract with them then call 0800 800 880 press option 2 and they will get it sorted.

Wait until a bill comes. Whoever sends you a telephone bill is the provider,

The provider is the company that you pay the bill to, look out your last telephone a/c, the address will be on that.

To find out the local provider that is on the phone line dial 1-(your area code) 555-1212. It will have a recording such as, "Thank you for using AT&T local!"
To find out the long distance provider dial 1-700-555-1212. Will also have a recording sayin who your long distance provider is.

Check your old bill - that will tell you who the provider is. Get your mail re-directed when you move in case you have to contact them once you have moved and they are writing to you at your old address.
