Church tradition and early writers (Iranaeus and others) date the book at AD 90. This eliminates the view that the events have already happened. Those who say it has happened are called preterists and say to book was written in AD 60 and the events were fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70.

Especially read the last two chapters of the book. Those things have obviously not been fulfilled.

The prophecies in the Bible that have been fulfilled follow a pattern of "literal prophecy - literal fulfillment." Revelation uses lofty language descriptions of things that John saw in the vision, but there is no reason to say that they don't correspond to things that are real.

It is hard to understand Revelation without a good handle on the Old Testament books of Daniel and Ezekiel.

There is a good book called "Four Views on Revelation" that would probably help you.

Revelation is a book of hope. That is what it is supposed to be all about. The purpose of the book was to comfort the persecuted Christians of St. John's day.

It is not about instilling fear about others, or contempt for others beliefs. That is the mark of a false teacher and it certainly isn't Christianity.

For example: "The Vatican sits on the seven hills in Rome therefore is the Whore of Babylon." WRONG. The Vatican is not in Rome, but on the other side of the Tiber River well away from any of the seven hills. Any map will show this. When you see this kind of reasoning, you are reading hate literature.

Another example: Why the cryptic name Babylon? First, the historical Babylon was the pagan power which persecuted the People of God, the Jews, between 610 and 538 BC, destroying the Temple and dispersing the people. The Romans inherited that mantle of infamy when they destroyed the Temple in 70 AD, and more importantly persecuted the new People of God, the Church. Thus, St. Peter, writing from Rome refers to as "Babylon" (1 Pt. 5:13) - a name any Jew or Christian familiar with the Old Testament would know. Peter cannot be referring to his own Church.

Finally, after distorting the text and history to read what they want into the Bible, and thereby obtaining God's "blessing" on their hatred of the Catholic Church, some "Christians" ignore the only texts of Scripture which tells us about the religious leanings of the Antichrist. The Catholic faith being a religion you would think they would see what it teaches on the only criteria the Bible actually gives about the Antichrist. In St. John's letters (1 John 4, 2 John 1), he tells us that the spirit of the Antichrist denies the Incarnation (the Son of God becoming man) and thereby also the Trinity (the Father and the Spirit, too).
THIS IS THE SPIRIT OF ANTI-CHRIST. There is not a single text in 2000 years, including the new Catechism of the Catholic Church, where the Catholic Church, her popes, her bishops, her official teachings, her saints, or her acknowledged ecclesiastical authors, deny the Word-made-flesh or the Blessed Trinity. Instead, all of Christianity owes the preservation of these Truths to the Catholic Church, whose great Councils formulated them and whose saints and popes have defended them to this day, often at the cost of martyrdom.

Be careful what you read.

Much of the prophecies of the book of Revelation is being fulfilled. Much more to be fulfilled soon, very soon. One example of a soon coming prophecy. The four horsemen. The white horseman represents a false prophet. The second horseman has a great sword. A great sword is a great weapon. At the time this prophecy was written a great sword was one of the greatest weapons of it's time. Now that great weapon is a nuclear device.

Rev.6:2And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
3 And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.
4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

Many people point to the future when reading Revelations. It's a reference point to the supposed end times. But, if you look at it from a purely logical viewpoint, the book was written by St. John based on a dream he had. Dreams are purely symbolic that have meaning applied to the dreamer only, not vast populations. Only St. John could accurately interpret this dream and how it applies to his life....not ours. I'm not a scholar, but if I was, I would read as much about the life of St. John and try to interpret the dream as it relates to his life and not try to apply it to anyone else....

The problem with prophesies is that they aren't written clearly. Some say the prophesies of Revelations are happening, will happen or have happened. I personally think it's happening, that each stage of the prophesies last years instead of in the blink of an eye.

It's "Revelation" - singular. It is a single revealing of a mystery. There is a great resource and studies at: http://www.tribulationforces.com
