My mother in-law was trying to be kind to my puppy, and when I was not present, had given her a turkey leg to chew on. She did not know the dangers of giving a dog turkey bones. My sister had lost her beagle when she got into a turkey carcus. The bones had spintered and pierced her intestine.
After I found Coco crunching on the turkey bone, I immediately picked up what was left and called the vet. They said to watch for vometing, dirrareah, loss of appitite. She did throw up this morning, but otherwise seems to be acting ok. I just started a new job last week, and couldn't really call in right away! I am the only one here today, everyone else is on vacation (I work in a small 4 person office)....so, I brought Coco in the office with me to keep an eye on her. HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED THE SAME? I will take her immediately to the vet, job or no job if anymore symptoms show.

I would like to thank everyone for the supportive answers. I pray she will be alright!! She is such a love. I think I will take her in anyway for a check up later on, but I just have to be here at work for the morning. Thanks again!

DOGS ARE AMAZING CREATURES. It is better never to give dogs bones because of the splinter factor. However, now that the bone has been eaten, and the dog threw some of it up, there isn't much you can do other than wait and see. Dogs have strong stomach acid to help them digest bones and other such things.
You're doing right by keeping an eye on her.
An old remedy to help things go through the bowels safely is bread. Plain white bread...if your dog will eat that. If she won't eat plain bread, you can put a little margarine on it, or peanut butter. That will help the pieces of bone pass through. If there is a sharp piece in there, it won't stop the bone fragment from piercing the bowel.
If she starts to swell in the belly, or can't have a bowel movement, or gets pale pink inside the mouth (gums and tongue), that could be sign of internal bleeding, take her to the vet as soon as possible. An x-ray will tell the vet what to do.
Good luck and thank you for loving your animal. So many people get pets and neglect them or don't know how to care for them and the pet suffers. :)

Watch her CAREFULLY. The throw up could have just been because of the unusual food in her diet yesterday, or it could be the beginning of a serious problem. Just keep in touch with your vet, and keep a close eye on her.
I will say that I've had a dog who repeatedly has gotten into the garbage and has eaten a number of turkey/chicken bones, and has done just fine.
Best wishes

I always heard that dogs can eat bird bones (hollow bones) but cat's can't. I give my Pomeranian bones from chicken and turkey all the time. He has survived so far! I think if you were really worried you could feed him some buttered corn or rice--my dog loves those. That would help surround the bone and keep things moving in the digestive tract.
I think I won't feed my dog that stuff anymore.

I would take the vets advice and watch for symptoms. Vomiting once could just be a result of eating the turkey itself. (didn't agree with her) If however, she shows any additional symptoms definitely go to vet asap. Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck

yes, my son was baby siting a Boston TERRIER that found a rib bone at the park and became very sick. he was vomiting and had diarrhea. the Dr took x-rays and kept him for a few days. we were lucky! there wasn't much damage and no surgery needed.300 dollars and 4 days later, we were extremely glad to see the dog home again.hope your Coco does as well. I m sure you will watch him close and get him the attention he needs.

Yes it has happened to my dog before. I always tell my father to NEVER give my dog any bones, but he really never listens (said he didn't want to waste food... blah!) . So he gave my dog this HUGE chicken bone (the worst bone) and starting eating the whole thing. I took it away, and my dog never became sick or ill or anything. The same thing happened with a rib bone. And another bone on a walk. And another one on another walk. My dog is still very healthy!

If there is no bloody diarrhea and she seems active you may be OK. I would feed my dog bread when something like this happened. The bread well kinda wrap around the bones and will help let them pass easier

She's going to be ok, she already threw up and if she looks happy enough she's likely fine. A pierced intestine or stomach would have left her feeling pretty sorry for herself by now.

I believe that after the amount of time that's passed, Coco is safe. She's with you anyway, so you can watch her, but I'm sure you can relax!
