You can get it without sexual contact from germs from the urinary system getting into the reproductive system (site below explains it in more details). But it can also be caused by sexual transferrance....;

I would ask your doctor what the infective organism was, that will help you determine if it was from an STD. However, guys can carry chlamydia and gonorrhea without showing symptoms, so even in that instance he may not have cheated. See below regarding an excerpt from an article on PID:
There are several ways women can get PID. The most common way is by having sex with a person who has gonorrhea or chlamydia.
Sometimes women get PID without being exposed to gonorrhea or chlamydia. In these cases, doctors aren't sure why the bacteria in the vagina spread into the uterus, fallopian tubes and abdomen, causing PID.
PID can also occur if bacteria infect your internal organs as a result of giving birth, or having a miscarriage, an abortion or a procedure to take a sample from the inside of the womb for laboratory testing. Sometimes PID can occur after the cervix is treated because of an abnormal Pap smear or after the insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD). However, this isn't common.

Doesn't mean he has cheated but possible cause. Depends how long you've been together as some infections can be ' silent' for months. Either way if you care about this guy you MUST talk to him. Remember he may think you've cheated and thing could end up a terrible mess. If the infection was from your boyfriend and he contracted it before you met you, you ,your boyfriend and any ex's of his NEED to know as you all may need treatment !!!!!! This is not always dump time THINK CAREFULLY. Good luck. x

It wasn't detected at your place of work flow to in view which you could desire to do a pelvic examination/cultures do diagnose it. it would not take place in a blood or urine attempt. They probably did common labwork, besides, and that would not instruct "particular" issues except they order a definite attempt. Bloodwork shows the quantities/sorts of the two categories of blood cells (a CBC, or finished blood count style), that could point out anemia, an infection/inflammation, etc (an infection might instruct in extra effective white blood cells, yet chlamydia would not reason that attempt to be odd in view that that an infection is limited to the area this is contaminated quite than being systemic). A metabolic panel shows the quantities of diverse chemistries/electrolytes which comprise sodium, potassium, and likewise common liver function enzymes, that style of element. odd consequences are interpreted accurately. A common UA (urinalysis, or urine attempt) shows if there are any crimson blood cells, white blood cells, glucose, nitrites, etc in the urine. maximum many times they're used to particularly diagnose a bladder an infection (UTI). It additionally would not instruct chlamydia. it rather isn't any longer that the scientific expert did no longer do something he became "meant" to do. Did they ask approximately your sexual history in any respect? in the event that they did no longer recognize that an STD could desire to be an determination, this is probably why they did no longer do a pap themselves. If it wasn't your gyn, they could no longer even do paps in any respect. That scientific expert did the well-known exams you will possibly do to locate a reason for abdomen soreness (which comprise a UTI).

Barbara is spot on. PID can be contracted in many ways, it's not always sexual. Also wiping yourself the wrong way can in some susceptible women lead to a PID, i.e.from back to front instead of front to back.

Though Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases[PID] are usually Sexually Transmitted Diseases[STD], there are other causes to this, in women, too.
I'd say you need to have your partner to get a check up, too to see if she is infected too, then it might be that she[or is it he?] cheated on you.
Have a nice day.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is usually caused by an STD like Chlamydia or Gonnorhoeae. Sometimes is can also be caused by leaving a tampon in for too long of a time frame--this wipes out magnesium in the uterus, and causes big problems. You and your boyfriend both need to get STD checked. I work in a university health clinic and we literally see this on a daily basis. It can be cured with antibiotics. As far as the cheating--I won't speculate. You know him better than any of us do here on Yahoo.

Not neccessarily - i had PID once due to a bad belly button piercing.
Check with your Doctor though as it could be caused by a few different things.

It's usually caused by chlamidia, but chlamidia can 'sleep' in your (or your partner's) body for years, so it doesn't neceserely mean he's cheated... Depends how long have you two been toghether though.
