You can get the status of your refund at irs.gov - there's a link on the left side that says something like "where's my refund". You'll need to enter some personal info and the amount of your refund.

As to filing, if your income is within certain limits, you can file online for free - there's info on irs.gov for that too.

And there is a program called VITA where trained volunteers will do your taxes at no charge. Most of those sites file electronically. They also have income limits - high 30's I think, and many sites will shade that a little if you're close. You can find the location of VITA sites on irs.gov also.

There are millions of sites where you can e-file your return. Search the IRS site for "free file" to see if you are eligible to e-file free. The deadline is Oct 16 for 2005 taxes. 2006 taxes can be e-filed beginning Jan 12. There is a 'Where's My Refund?" link on the IRS main page. You need your SSN, filing status and refund amount to use it.

you have until October 15 each year to efile.
There are many websites offering efiling and if your income is below a certain level then it is free to use.
After Oct 15, IRS prepares their system for the next filing year so If you miss the Oct 15 deadline then you have to mail in your return.
if you want to check the status of a refund for the latest tax year you can use IRS website or their automated system at 800 828 4477.
If the refund is for a year earlier than 2005 then you have to call them at 800 829 1040
