Any type of Collie or Shepherd needs a lot of exercise, not only for their body, but for their minds.
They are "Working Dogs" and they need to feel like they have a job, if they don't, they get very sad and mope around.

Agility, Flyball, or Herding - yes, all would help keep them busy, as they need to be 'employed'. But, you also would need to spend a lot of time practicing, playing, and jogging or walking it. Border Collies do best if you have a farm or sizable amount of land (several acres) where they can get out, it is not an apartment or small suburban yard dog. It's not just their bodies that need exercise, it is also their minds. Not a good beginers dog, but the perfect dog for a type A personality with the time to devote to this breed.
Go to www.akc.org, where you can find info on all the dog sport competitions & show schedules.

Greetings! Border Collies are great dogs, and one saved my life once by jumping between me and a bull, biting it on the nose, thus making it back off.
That said, they need lots of exercise! but more importantly, they need a job. You have to work their minds as well as their bodies or they will be come destructive... perhaps deciding that their job is to methodically tear apart your couch. Or bark their heads off without stop. They can be great dogs, but they are not low maintenance dogs!

Border Collies are a herding dog. They have lots of energy and need to be able to run and stay busy. They are smart and do well when trained for "competitions". They are great dogs, loyal and easily trained. Sports are great, just remember, they need to stay busy all year long, even if its just chasing a frisbee for you in your yard or park.

No, they also need a lot of walking, and obedience would be really good to keep their minds active. Agility will also do that to some degree, but they love flyball, too.
