So why do you wear tarbans and head dresses and men wear dresses and jews wear tiny hats (they probably have a posh name)
Explain their importance, if its not just to scare little children.

Turbans, I believe, had more social than religious implication. What type of turban you wore indicated where you stood in society. Now it just has a lot to do with tradition.

Head dresses on women are a sign of modesty, since a woman's hair is considered to be one of her most beautiful features.

"Dresses" for men are part tradition, part practicality, part religious. The religious aspect includes covering up the arms, which is something of the equivalent of the head dress on women.

The yarmulke is a sign of piety and respect. In America, it's considered polite and respectful for men to take off their hats after entering a building, when at a religious service, or during the national anthem. It's similar for the Jews, except for them it's keeping the head covered that's important. Women's long hair are supposed to serve this purpose for them, but since men don't have long hair, they're supposed to wear the yarmulke. One should not pray before God with one's head uncovered.
