Well, some people are very serious about marriage and feel that the official ceremony, etc. is neccessary to make it real etc. But, there are couples who just live together and have conjugak marriage, because they feel the certificate won't make their marriage any more real or valid. I tend to agree with your point, that you do not have to be married to make a relationship work. if you want it to work, you can make it happen without a piece of paper!!

Other than that, I really don't see a reason why people need to have an overly priced party to 'get married' and then turn around and get divorced a few years later. I think some people are too much into the whole 'wedding day' and want to be center of attention, and they don't think long term beyond that day. Too many people go in with blinders on. I did, and I'm kicking myself for it to this day, ten years later.

Usually for financial reasons, or to make the birth of a child legitimate.

Probably for tax purposes. That's the only reason I can think of, really.
