Firstly McDonalds and Burger King are not traditionally English so steer well clear of those places! Traditionally there is the "full English breakfast", this consists of fried or scrambled egg(s), bacon, baked beans, sausages, fried or tinned tomatoes, toast and a cup of tea. You will find that most cafes around Victoria station will serve an "all day breakfast" at a reasonable cost. A traditional English meal is usually known as a Sunday Lunch and consists of roast beef with gravy, boiled or roast potatoes, cabbage, carrots and peas. If you do not like beef you can choose between chicken, pork or lamb as an alternative. As the name suggests it is traditionally eaten on a Sunday. Most pubs serve this at a reasonable price and a starter and dessert is included in the price. Happy eating.

Victoria is not a great area for food, beyond pizza chains and burger joints. There is a fine French restaurant called Roussillon, which is the best in the area. There is also a simple bistro called Poule au Pot, which is pleasant and is reasonably priced. The Ebury Street wine bar has decent British food, but is not particularly traditional.

Given that the most popular dish in the UK now is chicken tikka masala, you might consider the Cinnamon Club, a smart up-market Indian place 10 minutes walk from Victoria (near Westminster). For very traditional British cooking you would need to go a short distance e.g. to Rules in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, which specialises in game and is the oldest restaurant in London. There is also Simpsons on the Strand, which is traditional though perhaps rather dull. For Modern British cooking try the Lindsay House in Soho, which has a Michelin star. Also not too far from Victoria is Drones, which does serve quite traditional dishes and is a capable restaurant.

Hard to beat the Ivy for an occasion - not sure if you will be able to get a table for then, but worth trying. Good, reliable food, and a fantastic atmosphere, and a good chance of spotting a few celebs (if Dale Winton and Carol Verderman count!). If your mum is a foodie, go to Locanda Locatelli, Giorgio Locatelli's place, just behind Marble Arch. The food is the best Italian I've ever had. Very expensive.

Why would you want a traditional English meal? After spending only a few weeks there I would have killed for a slice of Jimmy Dean.
