Read the instructions given to you by the pharmacy. They should tell you the optimal storage procedures.

You shouldn't keep them after the expiration. I know this sounds stupid, but the FDA has strict standards on expiration dates for a reason. Also, if the tablets are getting soft, then they are probably no good. Keep the bottles out of moist environments, ie: bathroom or medicine cabinet, and this should help. Also, ask the pharmacy if you can have a desicant in your bottle the next time. They usually aren't given out, but those are put in the big pharmacy bottles to keep them dry. This may help.

Your idea is totally dangerous. As it is all medicines are poisons with many side effects but are being used as a "necessary evil" and to safeguard the users from any sort of dangers the firms give their expiry date at least six months before the actual date. If you try to exploit this then you are doing this at the cost of your health and nobody could rescue you. It is just like penny wise and pound foolish.

When you get a prescription, you are supposed to take the medication as prescribed. I see two problems here; you are not taking your meds as prescribed and you are talking about taking medicines that are degrading. If you are talking about prn (as needed) medications, you need to get rid of them when they expire.

Talk to your pharmacist about this. I don't know enough about what drugs are going soft on you. If it is aspirin, the softened pills are harmful to you.
