You can alway go to a bank and get a secured credit card. This is one where you put a certain amount in security on deposit, and this is what your credit limit is. When you eastablish your credit worthiness, say in a year, then you can get your deposit back and get a regular one. Once you establish credit, you'll have more pre approved offers for credit cards in the mail than you know what to do with.

There are 4 ways to look at this.

1. Are you a student? If you are, you will soon be getting offers from most major credit card companies as they have credit cards targeted for the college student. These cards have no annual fee and will help you to build a credit history.

2. Do you have an American Express card? Amex will issue you one card for every intertional card that you hold. You can choose any card as well. You cannot apply through the application center but ask to speak to the relevant department.

3. If you have had a card in your home country (like citibank or bank of america), try calling them up and see if they could issue you with one and be prepared to give them past statements etc.

4. Open a bank account and get a secured credit card from the bank. Make sure the card reports to the three credit bureaus, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.

The best place to go to is your bank - the bank in which you hold a checking account (make an appointment first). Try asking for a credit card with a low credit limit (say, 500$) and if they refuse to give you that ask for a secured credit card (it's a card you put a deposit in and your credit limit equals your deposit). Good luck!
