What are some of his fav sports? My son loves lacrosse and I will be getting him his first helmet this christmas. Maybe he would want new equipment, a jersey, or tickets to a sporting event.
I also really like Discovery Toys. They have this really neat Forensics lab / DNA kit that sounds sooo interesting. I plan on getting it for my son. I am also considering the Fly Pen. Leapfrog's IQuest is also a good choice.
Lego Robotics, advanced car kits, other model kits are huge hits too!

I know exactly what you mean, I have an 11 year old boy as well and this has to be the hardest age to buy for. How about tickets to a hockey game, a stereo, digital camera, model kits, tools, kids love gift certificates and if you are considering a pet, this is a good age to get him one. Good luck.

how about books? DK publishers has great non-fiction books with fabulous photos and interesting text. they also have something called DK Eyewitness Classics, where they retell some classic story, like Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hide, and between each chapter, there is non-fiction info related to the era and subjects of the stories. Really wonderfully done.
The Robin Hood book is so wonderful; I cry each time I've read it to my kids, and they love hearing it and poring over the pages themselves.
You could also give him a coupon book for things like, "I'll stop whatever I'm doing and play a game with you." etc

wow....i'm not there yet, but I can suggest going with him to a great store (like the gap or old navy) and ask him to pick out something he likes. you can't go wrong there. then take him to eat pizza. shopping for a gift can be fun.
