I was talking to a friend the other day who said her dog kept whimpering in its sleep. It turned out the dog actually slept in the bed with her and her husband! Is this not the most disgusting thing to do with a dog? How unhygenic, I thought that having the dogs litter tray in the kitchen was obscene, but sleeping with a dog? I just can't get over it.

Our dog sleeps at the end of our bed and when it's relly cold gets under the duvet - he's only very small and is like a little hot water bottle! As long as your dog has no fleas and is clean I don't see the problem with it.
I've never actually heard of a dog having a litter tray! I thought only cats used litter trays - shouldn't he just be going outside?!

get over it. I have 6 dogs and a cat on my bed. Never caught a thing off them. Why is it unhygienic? I bath mine regularly, they are flea and worm free. You are more likely to catch something nasty of another human being. Dogs don't have litter trays, cats do.
I guess, some people have a sense of perspective and some people are a bit mimsy about 'germs'. You are obviously one of the people who are obsessed by germs.
, while I am not worried about them much. I have lots of animals, am happy to pick up dog poo, clean litter trays and hey, even get dirt on my hands sometimes.
I'd far rather have my clean little dogs on the bed than a sweaty farting, snoring, crotch scratching bloke any day of the week!

Sleeping with any animals can develop allergies and there is always the posibillity infestation from fleas, little critters in their fur and or tics can get on the people. Its not okay to let your dog/cat sleep in the bed. Next to the bed works well it gives both owner and animal the comfort of proximity and you can clean the floor a lot easier than taking apart an entire bed for infestation. If you get sick you don't need the company too. It's amazing you haven't run into one of those types before... btw when do dogs have litter trays?

I have had a dog as a family pet all of my life, and all of my dogs have slept with me at night, and my dog jake that I have had for the last 5 years, sleeps with me and my husband everynight, sometimes at the foot of the bed and sometimes in the middle. If you truly love an animal it becomes part of your family, he stays inside 98% of the time during the day, and he is bathed on a regular basis. It gives me comfort to know that he is close by and at night he is watching out for my family. I can't understand why you would feel so repulsed by that.

Our two small dogs both sleep on beds, one at the end of my parents' bed and one on mine. I think when I leave in a few months she's going to take over my room! Our big dog sleeps on the floor, but only because he'd need a whole double bed to himself. Oh, and we have no problems with attitude because our dogs sleep on the bed. Our family pecking order is and always has been

Parents -> Small dogs -> Kids -> Big dog -> Guineapigs :P

The big dog is just a big softy, as my mum calls him, or a total pansy, as my brother puts it.

Oh, and my brother is a lot less hygeinic than the dogs :D

My chocolate lab is the best bed partner. He sleeps with his back to me with his head right on the pillow. I can even cover him up. Now however, since my boyfriend moved in he isn't allowed in the bedroom. He doesn't like the shedding thing. He loves dogs we have seven. When I was single and living alone it was comforting to me to know he was there. I didn't live in the best neighborhood at the time. I knew I was safe when he was there. He is also my service dog . If my boyfriend ever leaves he will be right back where he started. Oh my boyfriend snores the dog doesnt .

Sorry to break this to you but thousands, if not millions, of people allow their dogs to sleep in their beds. Cuddling with a dog is very nice. I don't see what's so unhygenic about it as long as your dog is not rolling in filth all day. I keep my dog very clean and the only reason he doesn't sleep in my bed with us is because he has his own bed which he likes just fine! Some people are way too uptight about germs.

Lots of people sleep with their dogs. For one thing, they're very warm! And if you shower in the morning, it's not so unclean.

The problem can arise when the dog forgets that YOU are the alpha because it sleeps in an equal spot with you. That's why my schnauzer's bed is just below my side of the bed. Not equal to me, but I can just reach down and give him a scratch if he wimpers or I'm lonely.
