No. Although some form of national service for everyone has merit.

It's never a good idea to have people forced into a war they don't want to be in. I wouldn't want someone who doesn't want to be there watching the back of people who DO want to be there.
All this is is emotional blackmail. This guy is saying that if you support the war, it's hypocritical to not support a draft. That's complete ****. He's trying to make the US make the choice of either we have a draft or our military pulls immediately out of Iraq. This is the same guy who introduced a draft bill during the 2004 presidential campaign so that they could use a scare tactic to sway voters to the democrats. He didn't even vote for his own bill. He's a politician of the worst sort.

No the draft won't be back and Charlie knows it, what he is trying to point out is that our wars are fought almost exclusively by the poor and middle class, less than 1% of todays volunteer military comes from homes with incomes of $250,000.00 or above, this disparity is the problem, whether true or not it has the appearence of the poor fighting for the desires of the rich

Hell yes it's a good idea, but it won't pass unless our president wants another 100k troops for Iraq. By the uproar you would think the draft had anthrax attached to it. Instead of sitting home playing war games on a video console, your child can have the experience of a lifetime, become an army of one.
How can you be for the war, but against the draft? Isn't that like saying I'm for civil rights, just not your civil rights?

It's a wonderful idea! It won't pass but I think before our leaders agree to send other people's children to war they should know that theirs will be going as well. We saw in Vietnam that it was the young men who couldn't afford college that were sent to fight and to die. It sickens me when I consider the fact that 98% of the wealth in this nation is held by 2% of the population and that no one in that top 2% will ever fight to defend the nation that made them rich. No, they will just delegate that nasty task to their driver's son or daughter. I think if we don't have enough men and women volunteering that we shouldn't go to war. If it doesn't have that kind of support from our citizens we need to stay the h*ll out of it, but since war is now a political tool, let's make the playing field level and send EVERYONE'S child starting with children of the a**holes who voted to declare it! Wonder if we'd be in Iraq now if this had been in place when Bush randomly decided to pick a fight with Hussein?

No. Its political nonsence.
The reason the troop levels are down is that during the Clinton adminstration, they offered some cash incentives for troops in selected specialities to retire early or seperate the service. I don't remember the exact amount but its over 100,000 folks that left the service under those programs. I left the Air Force during this time period.

I personally believe that a mandatory stint is a good idea, it would
allow our young people to have experiences that otherwise they would never have, and be able to use it later in life.
For the less privileged, service is a way up and/or out, but it is the upper middle classes that take too much for granted.
I think that the people who take our liberties for granted, such as burning our flag under "free speech" would be much more appreciative if they had the experiences that I had in the Republic of Korea.

Yeah, judging by the fact that he is a Democrat and he voted against his own bill (that got shut down 402-2) last time he tried to implement the draft, I would say that this won't happen.
And it better not.

Rangel seems to be the only 1 who wants it. Other Dems don't. Reps don't, military leaders don't. I think Rangel is wrong.

Yes we need a Draft! We need to draft every 18 year old male into the military. The military is now to small to fight the crusade against Islam.
