The title of " greatest writer" would be hard to justify in all but a few cases. Many who agree that Shakespeare was one of the greatest writers may not agree that he was absolutely the greatest, though he may come closer to it than many others. It would be easier to say that Cervantes was possibly the greatest Spanish writer or Tolstoy the greatest Russian writer. Was Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, the greatest master of detective fiction? Some would agree, others not. Was James Joyce the greatest 20th-century novelist? Great, greater, and greatest do have meaning but the question cannot be solved easily in relation to particular writers.
