To me, defense mechanisms are linked to ego and super ego, perceived threats to each other automatically bringing defense mechanisms in to play.

Those who are secure don't need a plethora of defense mechanisms, as they inherently are comfortable in social situations and rarely feel challenged or attacked.

Defense mechanisms, although used at one time or another, either consciously or sub-consciously (Id), by all, those whose egos are safe don't need them.
