When I go down the pub with my mates... the women stay at home to look after the kids!
Suppose that's why 2 of our group have recently got divorced,

It is generally more socially acceptable for a man to go into a pub alone just to drink.
Also a large proportion of tv shows on during the week appeal more to women so they have less reason to go out.
Also most drinks women tend to enjoy such as bottled largers, wine, and spirit with mixer are available from shops to drink at home. Unless a man has a beer pump in his house I doubt he can drink a tasty pint of ale at home.
Wages do not really come into it - I drank more when I was a student and when I was unemployed then I ever did when I was at work. If you think about the pubs where you worked did the people who drank more heavily earn more than those who only had a few drinks - if anything the inverse may be truer.
Finally most women of the older generations do not want to go drinking in pubs - it is not the sort of thing they enjoy doing.

To tell you the truth - I just do not feel comfortable going in alone into a pub. I am OK with restaurants, coffee shops etc and I do like to have a drink after work but do it where I am comfortable. Pubs are all the same where ever I go - I also hate being "hit" on. It's like - since I do not have company lets see who can take me home!

I'd like to say that they have more interesting life but most of the guys in the pub where I work have kids with preseent or ex girlfriends who all have sole custody and are at home looking after the kids. Also most of the regular guys are in most days, regardless of working hours, they never arrange to meet anyone, just talk to whoever is about. Women don't do this so much, most of us don't go to the pub unless we're meeting people.

Probably because women, being maintained by their husbands have the working week for their social activities with other women. Men, being occupied during the working week, have only the evenings and weekends for socialising.
Many housewives intentionally leave their duties to the evening and weekends in order to give the impression that they are busy throughout the week.
See how many men there are at the local tennis club on a weekday lunchtime. My estimate is less than 20%.

Foreigners may find this hard to believe, but I have never, ever experienced discrimination in my life. I don't say it doesn't exist, but I personally didn't experience it. As for your question, I find it ridiculous to spend so much time sitting around and drinking. As you have commented, I have too many "meaningful" things to do to spare time for that. Heck, watching a silly soap opera looks more meaningful then that. I don't think pub attendance is a sign of equality. Maybe we women need other places to get together.

i myself have worked in pubs for some time. i dont know if you have had the opportunity to notice that a large amount of the conversation that men indulge in during these times is either overly aggressive (in an attempt to impress you) or just outright boring . im a girl that is interested in sports etc and yet am surprised at how quickly i get bored at listening to drunk men, this may explain why other women dont indulge

I have noticed this.
I don't think its got anything to do with the money women earn & everything to do with the fact that no matter how much time goes by & no matter how many women work as well, men still think women should be chained to the kitchen sink.
What's the old joke?.....Why do women wear white on their wedding day?.....Because all kitchen appliances come in white.
I think this whole attitude sums it up. Men are A Double Snakes if you get my meaning.

It's very likely that the women are at home cooking and cleaning. Even with more women working full time, studies still show that women do most of the domestic work and child care.

Western culture has put most males into such a repressed and abnormal reality that they can only bond with one another if they are playing sport together (which allows them physical contact) or if they are drinking (which lowers their inhibitions). It is very pitiful, but many do not know how to touch or talk otherwise. At least not very well. So they congregate in pubs or on the field together. Being far less repressed, women do not have these needs. We just like to go to the women's room together.
