I'm going on a guided tour so don't need details of hotels, restaurants and transport - just a good guide to towns, national parks, wildlife, culture, etc. that I can read before I go.

The Moon series is excellent but the most recent edition is 2004. Lonely Planet and Footprint series are good to. Fodors and Frommers are not designed for the budget traveller but if you can spend more the $90 per night on lodging they are good. Fodors has a new edition. However the BEST is the New Key to Costa Rica. It is not a series like the others, it is only published for Costa Rica.

I like the Lonely Planet Guides. They do cover hotels and such, but they have a lot of other information. I use them when we travel, and most of our itineraries are already put together before we leave. They have a nice section in the front with a very basic history of the country. They list good market places, stuff to do at night and give you a feel for the areas you are visiting.

I in various of circumstances take a pair of denims and a couple of shorts to Costa Rica. i do not locate it too be overly warm, yet I suspenct that would want to substitute in distinct places. The forests are properly lined and that i in various of circumstances hike in denims and a t-blouse. i come across the evenings a touch cool, and continually carry a jacket. purely to be on the secure aspect, i'd carry both (I in various of circumstances do).
