I never answer chain mail as I am not superstitious in any way. Nothing bad has every happened to me because I don't answer it so I guess the answer to your question is NO. Chain mail can ruin some people's lives if they allow it to. When I get any it goes straight in the bin where it belongs. Hope this helps.
For any persons out there who send any DON'T. Chain mail sent as a joke or sent in innocence on the part of the sender can cause considerable upset to some vulnerable people.

I received a piece of mail a few years ago about 1980 addressed to my father. I opened it as dad died in 1968. it was a chain letter. now how could this letter be answered ? the last time I personally received a chain letter I printed it off on the computer and placed it in the required number of books at the public library. not superstitious but why take chances ?

I know a guy in China who didn't send on a chain letter he received and a few days later his then girlfriend said Yes! when he asked her to marry him He is still married and his wife is expecting their first child after not sending on another dozen or so chain mail letters so it must be true that you only get bad luck if you break the chain...
NOT!

What happens when you don't answer or pass on chain mail is you cause someone else not to have to go through the trouble of deleting unwanted messages.

If you don't answer it... Then some lucky person is spared deleting it from there 'in-box'
I have no friends due to not forwarding e-mails... I have lousy luck because I deleted in 5 seconds as opposed to sending on e-mails....
Yep like the great e-mail observer has time to check....
They do???... No wonder I didn't win the lottery AGAIN!!
Ok...Seriously....NO....Nothing will happen to you due to 'chain mail'

people must be a bit stupid to believe it works because you get so many chain mails that every one being right is so small. if i were you i would just delete as soon as you glance at the message and work out that its a chain mail .

Absolutely nothing will happen to you, its just a mean and selfish piece of paper with pathetic words written on it, its meant to scare people, never let a chain letter get to you, just throw it away or delete it if it comes via you computer, the people that send these nasty chain letters out what locking up, never answer one, just dispose of it and good luck.

The only time I ever send chain mail on is if I think my friends will find it funny.

I just scrolled down all the answers to this question and there doesnt seem to be anyone that believes it means anything. "just bin it" "nothing happens" etc. And whilst i agree with these answers, and never send it or forward it to anyone else. Im a little perplexed as to where it comes from. If no-one believes in it then why do we get it?
Surely theremust be some nutters out there willing to stand up for what they do, come on we want to see your reasons for bombarding us with this emotional blackmail/garbage.

Nothing happens. I always bin it, no qualms and so far Im alive and healthy. The chain mail is started by sick people with too much time on their hands and perpetuated by people who are frightened to not send it on.
I can guarantee that by binning it you are not risking bad luck, financial ruin or any other such rubbish...;
