First, the Speedometer predates the Speed Limit.
Second, they tried reducing the numbers on the Speedometer and drivers didn't like it. In fact, they paid extra to buy racing gauges.
And Third, speedometers are usually spring activated. The more the go to the right the more the spring is strained. Over time the sping gets spung and the needle begins to float and stick and give you inacurate readouts. So. if you keep the needle on the left hand side of the dial it should keep functioning longer and designing the dial to do so makes perfect sense.

There are roads out west, in sparsely populated areas where there are no speed limits, but I suspect the reason for it is that it would be hard to sell a car with a speedometer that only goes to 65

i don't understand what u . s . a . you reside in Mister, yet autos are bought for human beings in many countries, and states interior of countries, the place the policies are distinctive. Germany has autobahns the place you're able to do 2 hundred mph or bigger, in case your automobile is able to it. Brazil has velocity limits way bigger than those in u . s . a .. Canada has some that are somewhat bigger than u . s . a .. interior u . s . a ., the a number of states have policies below the policies of the U. S. federal device, with one exception. Oklahoma has refused to settle for any federal money for its highways and to that end isn't sure by the federal strings related, so they have velocity limits of 80 and above on some highways. a large variety of the u . s . a . has sixty 5 mph authentic velocity on substantial highways, fifty 5 on minor ones. the priority isn't what the speedometer is going as much as, yet what the automobile is able to going as much as. permit's assume it exchange into such as you suggested ... purchase a automobile whose speedometer is going as much as 60 mph. a man or woman could nonetheless rigidity the automobile at a hundred mph. The speedometer woulld bypass as much as 60 then draw close there, caught as extreme because it could bypass, jointly as the automobile certainly plenty swifter. as quickly as upon a time i exchange into in a hiway warriers subject the place i exchange into the hen attempting to get faraway from people who have been attacking different drivers with their autos. I positioned automobile in opposite to objective to get faraway from them ... at one element i exchange into utilising, i'd estimate 40 mph backwards. i spotted that the odometer did no longer flow backwards or forwards, and the speedometer study 0. i don't understand if this would be authentic for all autos. My element is that the speedometer isn't a governor that proclaims you are able to no longer bypass over the decrease shown on the guage, it particularly is barely a device for measuring what you're doing. it particularly is misguided, and it has obstacles.

I think it is a sales ploy. For instance, my son's car has a speedometer that registers 220MPH. Who is anybody kidding? What is he going to do, join NASCAR? However, if you know that your car could go 220MPH it makes the guy in the SUPRA next to you look a little less smug.

The speed limit can be subject to change, also you may take a trip to Germany and drive on the Auto Bahn (no speed limits here).

That's a very good question, I dunno why. They want to torment people by giving them something they ultimately cant have. Like giving someone 150 everyday and say here you can only spend 30 of it.

So if you accidentally go over the speed limit, you can tell how far over you went.
