Moved to Hazard with his mother, and the people of the town didn't like what they saw in him as a boy. Mary was the only one to give him any attention later on in life as she identified with him, and they wanted to escape the small mentality of the town together. She disappeared one day and he was accused of killing her on one of their walks by the river, though her body wasn't found. Even though he is innocent, he thinks back to all the crap he's received through his life and decided that he might as well take the blame, because that is all people think of him.
