Do you think I should allow that 'philter' thing that sends details of the sites you visit to Microsoft? They say it's to warn you about sites impersonating other sites. It sounds a bit like Big Brother to me but maybe it's needed. I don't know. Can anyone tell me if I should go for it or not, please?

It is called a Phishing Filter and it sends the site you want to visit to Microsoft. It does not send any other information.

There are websites that are set up specifically to scan your computer for personal information that is stored on it. This Filter sends the site you want to visit to Microsoft and it is then checked against a list if known Phishing sites. If it is not on the list the a Microsoft program examines the site to see if it Phishes for your personal information. If it does, you are told it is a Phishing Site. Microsoft doesn't block the site, but leaves it up to you.

Microsoft says about 100 new phishing sites start everyday. So, if you don't mind having your identity stolen and your life ruined, then don't use it.

it's a phishing filter. you can turn it off if you want to. I don't know how good it is, I've never had the "alarm" go off yet and I've been using IE7 since last April when it was still in beta. The only time I've ever find phishing sites are links sent to me in an email, and I'm not dumb enought to fall for that.
As for the "delete the damn thing and download firefox" nazis out there, I'm having this argument with my wife. She is still running IE6 on my desktop computer and refuses to even look at IE7 or firefox. so what do i got? I got a computer that wars with itself for 15 minutes at every boot-up becuase she ran the patch to block IE7 which is a HIGH PRIORITY update that windows tries to install but then doesn't because of the stupid blocking patch. argh! leave IE7 on your computer is what i say. Firefox and IE7 can cohabit the same system, I use them both on my laptop.

If your worried about big brother but you still want protection from phishing sites, use Firefox because they have the same protection except by default your info is not sent to Google (that's the service FF uses). Instead, it is checked against a black list that is downloaded to your PC every half an hour.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Firefox's privacy disclaimer on default settings
"Check using a downloaded list of suspected sites
With this option selected, Firefox will check the current site against a frequently updated list stored on your computer. No data about the sites you visit is transferred to third-party anti-phishing providers"
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/options
If you choose, you can have your surfing sites sent to Google for more protection, but this is only if you purposely opt in for it

IE7's disclaimer (You have no choice if you want fishing protection)
"When you use Phishing Filter to check websites automatically or manually, the address of the website you are visiting will be sent to Microsoft, together with some standard information from your computer such as IP address, browser type, and Phishing Filter version number."

Don't uninstall IE 7; its integrated with Windows Explorer.
Just install Mozilla Firefox 2 and set it as your default browser.
I'd also add the AdBlocker plugin from the Mozilla site, its brilliant and really speeds up the internet.

you seem to be worried when you have no need to be.

The anti phishing filter can be disabled if you want to although it is not sending any information to microsoft.

In all honesty I would keep IE7, it seems to be working much better now than it did in Beta version

If you really want to uninstall it just go to add remove programs in the control panel, it's listed as windows internet explorer 7

I installed IE 7 last week and hated it, so I did a System Restore to a date previous to my installing IE 7. Now I'm back to IE 6, and much prefer it. Try Firefox, I did and it's not bad.
