The original ashes (from the bails of the first Test match that England lost against Australia) and their urn are kept in the Museum at Lords. The MCC decided that they are too fragile to leave the country and so a replica is presented to the winning team.

The Ashes urn (the real thing NOTa replica) is currently in australia on an official MCC Tour it will be on display for fourteen weeks in various locations starting with Sydney and ending in Melbourne. Then it's back home to Lords. The winning side gets a replica. This is only the second time that the Ashes have left these shores in it's history the first was in 1988 for the bicentennial of european settlement of that convict colony.

The original urn of the Ashes remains at Lords, it is a replica of the urn containing the ashes of the stumps burned that is transported between England and Australia.

No. Traditionally a Waterford crystal replica urn - which is rather bigger and more impressive than the actual Ashes trophy itself - is presented to the winning captain to take home.
The Ashes themselves are usually kept in the MCC Museum at Lords, but are currently on tour around six Australian museums. See linky below for details.

No they normally always live at lords. This time they are being taken on an exceptional tour of Australia, I think its the second time this has happened. I don't think this is very fair but its said that they are fragile. The story of the ashes themselves is a contested one when wg Grace ran out someone an Austrialian in a very disputed manner so they burnt the bails to make the ashes

No the original ashes stay in a sealed case in a museum in the UK. The ashes are too fragile to leave the uk and therfore a replica is given to the winning team.

No, the ashes do not leave England when the Aussies win. They are kept at the MCC museum.

The Ashes are in Australia at the moment. They used to be permanantly kept at Lord's but for some years now they go to the winning country. Hope to see them back at Lord's soon.
