I like either Flagstaff or Denver. It would depend on what you want to do, and if you have an auto.
Flagstaff is quite close to Sedona, and Sedona has a lot of things to do, but the cost of living is quite high. Additionally, Flagstaff has nearby snowskiing,(practically in town), and is close to so many attractions like the Grand Canyon, and isn't that far from Phoenix.
Denver has so much to do, especially considering all the widely varied options nearby.
Dallas is kind of nice, but traffic is crazy.

I would recommend Chicago.. I lived in both NYC and LA. It is still fairly expensive but much less (about half the price for rent) than both NYC or LA.
