Well done, Lipsiot! I had 'Spenser/Spencer' bugging about in my brain and i didn't know why when i read the other answers!

The quote is,

"Sleep after toil, port after stormy seas, ease after war, death after life does greatly please."

and it comes from "The Faerie Queene" by Sir Edmund Spenser, English poet (1552-1599).

As a matter of interest, it is used frequently at funeral services and was used at Mark Twain's.

Edmund Spenser is the author, its from The Faerie Queen.

Book 1, Canto 9,
