Use the best oil that you can afford from a factory sealed container. 10W30, or 10W40 will do. Castrol, Valvoline, or if synthetic, Mobil 1. Use a new oil filter, too. Have all fluids checked and topped off.

Any fully synthetic oil will do. My prefered choice is Shell Helix Ultra. It's not too expensive & it's makes the engine acceleration smoother. You can feel it straight after oil change when you drive your car. You can also try & test various brands till you find your favourite brand. A 1997 car is not too old. What I have heard is that cars over 10 years old are recommended to use thick oil such as SAE 40 so as to provide a thicker cushioning effect between the moving parts of your engine. The down side is that thick oil affects acceleration except for turbocharged engines. Turbocharged engines need thick oil because of the high heat & the high compression created by the turbocharger.

almost all the oils for sale in a garage forecourt will do for this lightly stressed and older engine. Like everything else, the more you pay the better the quality, the best oil is Mobil 1 but this will cost around £40 for 5 litres, Texaco do a good semi synthetic oil at half this price which will probably do the job just as well in real terms for your engine
