I don't know how many Wiccans or people who identify as Pagan are here on Yahoo Answers, and how many of them identify as gay/bisexual/transgendered, but I'd love to hear from you! Or even those who aren't, but have something serious and thoughtful to say on the subject.

I know that both Wicca and paganism put a lot of stock into masculinity and femininty as energies (yin/yang), with a God and Goddess and everything coming, symbolically, from the union of the two. That's not to say that the gender roles are strict- in fact, they give more freedom to men to access their feminine sides and women their masculine sides- or that they are heterosexually-centered (I note that the community is actually very open and sexually fluid), but still these general themes exist, especially the God-Goddess union.

How does that affect you- gay/bisexual or transgender/transsexual? Is it a problem or not at all? What are your general thoughts aobut this? I'd like to have a nice discussion about it.

The great thing about Wicca/Paganism is that most traditions completely agree with modern science which has proven that homosexuality is just as necessary to some species as heterosexuality. Especially in social species. So we agree with it from a scientific point of view and a spiritual point of view.

From the spiritual point of view it is accepted because of two commonly believed philosophies. The first is that humans reincarnate into other animals, plants (in certain traditions), and other humans reguardless of gender. That leads us to believe that the soul is in fact either sexless or made up of equal (or nearly equal parts male and female energies). Secondly, we believe that the God and Goddess lie within all of us, some portray more outwardly those characteristics of Goddess and some of God, some very equally both.

I myself am bisexual and have known about my bisexuality since before I was Wiccan. It was one reason I could no longer agree with the religion of Christianity and it's intolerance for others.

Thirdly, Wiccans adhere to only one Rede. That is An Harm Ye None, Do What Thou Will. Therefore our sexual desires, preferences and orientations do not conflict with our spiritual path as long as all partners are consensual and of age to be consensual and we are practicing sex that is safe for all those involved.

As a bi-sexual Pagan, Druid not Wiccan, I've never actually thought about how my faith affected my lifestyle. Like the French philosopher said: "I did not choose to be who, and what, I am, but, since it is me, I will neither deny nor apologize for it." Gender roles are societal. not natural, and they vary from society to society. Anthropologically over 50% of human societies have had homosexuality as the norm rather than the exception. Some sources put it as high as 70%, but I question that. It is a fact that homosexuality tends to be high in warrior societies, Greece, Rome, the Celts, the Samurai, Native Americans, to name a few. It's as if in some countries efforts to to suppress homosexuality they are trying to make men ashamed of being men. Druidic Law, going back almost 5,000 years, has never had a problem with homosexual relationships, ancient Greeks, like Diodorus the Traveler, thought that Celtic youths were shameless. We also recognize same sex marriage. The God and Goddess are, indeed, integral to our faith, but this does not interfere with how we live our lives. I would also enjoy such a discussion, please feel free to e-mail me.

This is an interesting subject and i am pleased to answer.
I myself as a gay wiccan find that it allows me to be more open minded to different ideas and that is how I found where I am. I understand a little of what your saying about the whole god/goddess reprituire, I find that is make things easier for myself as a wiccan especially when some spells or rituals that I may do that need a more feminine aura i find that being intouch with both sides helps me stay level. So I guess I am saying I agree with your hypothesis.

I disagree with you. First, I am not afraid of GLBT people. I don't like it when when they hit on me and they know I am straight. That is just being disrespectful to me. If I know a woman I like is lesbian I respect that and don't make a move on her. That is the proper thing to do. I never dry hump anything in public or commit any perverted acts in public. I have never developed a new phrase to offend gay people, those phrases have been there long before I was born. And I don't believe in God. Therefore I would never tell you that God hates you. Please don't Corral all straight people into one single group. I am straight. And I don't belong to the group you just described. As far as I am concerned. I don't care if you are gay. As long as you are happy and not killing or harming anyone else. I say "live and let live".

Wow! What a great question!

This doesn't really bother me, I'm Bi, and I understand my sexual preferences, and how to incorporate them with my faith.

You might want to check out newWitch magazine. They recently did a feature on T. Thorne Coyle a transgendered MTF who belongs to the Feri Tradition. They have lots of good articles for ALL pagans, not just Hetero or Gay pagans.

Including Gods and Goddesses for Gay Lesbian, Bi and Transgendered people.

As a matter of fact, the new editor is also a MTF transgendered person.

As for helping to organize and deal with your feelings about spirituality and Wicca, I LOVE the book Gay WitchCraft by Chris Penzcak.

Homosexuals in the Indian Culture, In the Native American culture, and the African Culture have been praised and put into high religious positions. In Africa they are referred to as two spirited people. The rare ability to tap into their masculine and feminine energies. This is why most Shamans, medicine men or whatever were Homosexuals.

I find this question quite interesting.
I have friends who are either Wicca or Druid.
I believe their belief system allows for people to be who they really are, not having to mask their true self.
In comparison to conformed religion, those people are made to believe there is only one way to live.

It's simply a completion of the balance that we all need to find within ourselves. Far from being a problem, it is a big help actually.
