We live in Australia and have no cooling in our brick house. On a bad day the temp indoors can get to 30C. We need to look at either an evaporative or airconditioning unit for cooling and it has to be portable as we are renting. Aircon is nearly twice the price of evaporative ($700 vs $400) but is it twice as good. As a kid we had evaporative and I don't remember it as helping very much...

Living in Arizona, where our temps get up to 100+, I know the answer to this one!

A portable a/c may cost more initially, but you'll end up being glad you paid the extra $ once high temps hit. A swamp cooler (that's what we call them) has limited cooling abilities. And as noted above, they only work well when the humidity is low. An a/c works consistantly.

An added note, don't bother with the floor models. You can get one to fit a window - that way nothing will have to be modified in your rental and you can take it with you when you leave, but it cools more square footage than the floor model.

Evaporators only reduce he humidity, not the temperature. Evaporators have to run for lengthy periods of time to work.

A/C units remove humidity and cool the air also.
A/C units are relatively quick acting.

If you want optimum performance, go with the more expensive A/C unit!

Evaporative cooling is meant to be the cheapest option with running costs and be more effective, but have a read of the information from the link below for you to make your decision.

Good Luck

I bought a top of the line swamp cooler, used it for a month then shut her down and its sitting in the garage.
The inside "matting" started to smell of mildew and then the air blowing out of it started to smell like sour dish rag!
I live in a very dry climate and was very careful not to let water sit in the basin or have the machine sit without using it. (it was the hottest part of Summer).
Get an air conditioner, keep all the windows shut and blinds down and you will be much happier!
