Yes, it's good. Vinegar gets out the rancid smells that laundry detergent doesn't. Certain smells don't like to come out, ie: cat urine, human urine, underarm moisture etc. The vinegar will remove those. Put half a cup of vinegar in along with your detergent.

I was told vinegar is a good substitute for softener. Put half a cup in rinse load and it does make clothes softer.

I have heard that it is a good floor cleaner as well - so i guess it could wash the clothes as well??

You've already had some really good answers, but I wanted to add that it doesn't make the clothes smell like vinegar. I use it all the time. It cleans, softens, deodorizes, disinfects... Wonderful stuff. It has the added benefit of helping to flush any residue out of the washer and drain.

Put half a cup of white vinegar in the final rinse cycle. It will not only act as fabric conditioner for your clothes, it will remove soap residue, it will make your towels fluffy, and also clean the pipes of your washing machine of gunk.

Besides being a great disinfectant (I used it on the toys & tables in my pre-school classroom instead of bleach. I also had the healthiest class there), it is a great odor remover.
It can also be used with a 1st (cold water) wash of a bright color to help set the color in & have less of it fade out.It leaves no odor if you use white vinegar.
Go for it!
