Any execuse that has previously been accepted by a colleague. Your employer must treat you consistently with your colleagues. If they disciplined you in such a fashion any Union rep with half a brain (around 50%) would wipe the floor with them.

Advice dont push it. If there are procedures regarding lateness etc read them. You have probably signed a contract and are subject to common terms suc as "Any employee who is late more than x times in a y period will recieve a verbal warning" etc.

If you are really unlucky HR will start to get involved in your private life to see how they can help you. Using their "duty of care" to pry and make you feel really uncomfortable. At this point ask yourself is the time off worth it.

Car broke down, so decided to catch the bus. Bus was late, and some elderly lady fell over, so decided to help her, by which time the bus turns up and leaves again, so have to wait for next bus. I have plenty for homework too. You could try turning up on time.

if you haven't left out and your already over a hour late, then i'd probably phone in sick, or you can say that a bus had a crash which meant traffic was diverted to a different route..If you tell your boss of the imaginary accident scene and of all the commotion it caused and say a real bus number, he/she will probably believe you...and won't even bother to check it out.
