Crossover cables are similar to normal cables, but they allow you to connect two PCs together without the need for a Hub or Switch.

There are a lot of network devices that now have Auto MDI/MDIX,
this does away with the need for crossover cables.

A crossover cable connects two computers together, so the connection must be directly from one computer to the other, with no routers in between.

The web link above tells you how to wire the cable - but once wired just connect to the port at the back of the PC - if done correctly a green light will come on to indicate a connection

connect each end to the ethernet or network port on the back of each computer.

then go to network properties and set the ip address of the first computer to something like 192.168.0.1 and the default gateway to 192.168.0.2

Then on the second computer set the ip address to 192.168.0.2 and the default gateway to 192.168.0.1.

oh yeh and leave the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 on both PC's

that should do it I think
