Deterioration is caused by oxidation - in dry leather,cracking and flaking ---- chemical damage from ultra- violet light,ozone and air pollutants ---- internal chafing, when leather is dry and is flexed, breaking fibres ---- and external abrasion,rubbing in of dirt particles, as on handbag strap, belt etc ......

You mean WEAR off? If so, it's becxause of 2 things. Moisture and rubbing. If your wallet gets sweaty and rubs in your pocket, after a few years it starts to fall apart.

Generally because they are fake, not real leather. Leather will wear, but very slowly.
