It would proabably be the same if they came over here and joined in a game of gridiron or baseball. They just haven't taken to it like some would have hoped, despite having plenty of opportunity. Having said that the mens international team IS improving and the ladies are sweeping all before them.

Traditionally football (or soccer) is not considered to be a popular game in the USA but I believe it is popular amongst children. USA are ranked 31 (out of 198) by the official FIFA rankings (compared to the two Irish teams at 48 and 49 and Scotland at 24) so they can't be that bad and they did look to be a good team at the world cup.
I think its more a question of the organisation and resources put into developing the game. There is no inherent reason why Americans should be any worse than anyone else but they need the professional game to develop and become more popular before they can advance and young children take it more seriously. Look at Africa for example, they have many great players but many countries there lack the financial resources to develop the game.

Football is far too technical and complicated for your average American.
Imagine trying to explain the offside rule to an American.

Also they don't have the concentration span to last 45 minutes. They need to be able to get up and get a burger every 10 minutes.

Thats why they stick to simplified versions of Rugby and Rounders where they can keep taking breaks.

It's just not played much here. It's not as popular, so you guys are much better! We have soccer teams in schools but football (American) and baseball and basketball are much more popular.

When I was playing little league baseball I don't think I had ever heard of soccer. We had better sports to play. My High School didn't even have a team until my senior year. But now, (for some reason) it's growing in popularity. More and more kids are learning it at an early age so our National teams will continue to improve. Enjoy your supremacy at your "technical and complicated" game while you can. It won't last too much longer.

when organized "modern" soccer was being exported to the world in the mid to late 19th century by England (I realize that others played it without "English" exportation), the US already had several sports in gestation: football and baseball specifically. We weren't overall really fond of England at the time (who was exporting soccer to the world -- see the war of 1812 where they were conscripting - i.e. kidnapping - our sailors to fight Napoleon and they had built some way ships for the south during the civil war). In the end, we were so large at the time (and a bit anti-English) that we fell in love with our own sports and they fit our personality too. Remember, our country is on the newer side and there are two giant oceans separating us from the rest of the "modern" world, especially on the 19th century scale - no airplanes.

Americans are useless at football. They have took our game and changed it to a different game altogether. I watched a match not long ago and the score was 9-6. says it all really. Americans have a concentration span of zilch so need constant goals to keep them entertained.
ps. American Football...what's all that about?

its not that they can't play it its that they don't play it. kids would have a baseball mitt before they have a football. football is the beautiful game it costs nothing for a kickabout, kids in africa make balls from string and plastic bags, and a 16 year old african could probably out preform an overpaid european on the field. america seems to be about winning being the best, football isn't about that its about kicking a ball about with mates and having fun. no need for shin pads or posts. they try to over be over technical with something that is a very simplistic game.

Over all most Americans aren't familiar with soccer, but there are many people who are great and they aren't that hard to find.
